Best Guide For Carry On Only Packing List for 7-Day Trip

WANT TO SAVE MONEY AND TIME USING A CARRY-ON-ONLY PACKING LIST?

I was the queen of ‘being prepared’ and having everything I needed for a vacation. Especially when I was packing for myself and three young children, I wanted to make sure I had everything and not have to do laundry on a trip.

However, I have now become better at planning and learned how to pack everything I need for a 7-day trip into a carry-on suitcase. My biggest accomplishment was traveling to Disney World with only a carry-on. I didn’t have to check a bag, wait for it at the carousel, or worry about losing luggage. Wearing the clothes and shoes I had planned for and not having several things I never wore taking up space felt like a great accomplishment.

In this post, you’ll find my simple 7-day carry-on packing formula, seasonal packing ideas, and tips, plus a free printable checklist that you can customize for any trip.

Carry On Only Packing List

This carry-on-only packing list keeps things simple and light while ensuring you have everything you need for your trip. It works for both short trips and longer trips, such as a 7-day vacation. The more you practice using a carry-on for your trips, the more skilled you will become at packing with carry-ons!

You may not want to waste your time checking and picking up your luggage or paying airline baggage fees. You can be very intentional when packing and still have everything you need for a 7-day trip, even if you don’t check a bag.

Packing at the last minute may not be effective if you want to use a carry-on effectively. However, the more you fine-tune your packing strategy with a carry-on, the less time you may need to spend preparing for a trip.

I have used a carry-on only in 2025, and so far, I have felt I had everything I needed on each trip. Sometimes, I worry I am going to max out my space, but so far, so good. I am implementing the packing strategies I share below, which is like a fun puzzle.

This list provides a starting point for packing, and by mixing and matching your wardrobe, you won’t overstuff.

With every airline now charging for bags, this may be a strategy you want to consider implementing as well.

My 7-Day Carry-On Packing Formula

If you are tired of overpacking and still having nothing to wear, this formula is for you. This will fit well in a carry-on and have a little space left for items you need to bring home. Here is the breakdown:

THE PACKING FORMULA

👖Clothing

Think about how you can mix, match and repeat as you choose your clothing items.

  • 3-4 tops (mix and match, ones you can wear during the day and night)
  • 2-3 bottoms (mix of pants, shorts, or skirts)
  • 1 dress or outfit for more formal occasions (optional)
  • 1 light jacket or sweater
  • 7 pairs of underwear (and bras)
  • 3 pairs of socks (adjust based on the shoes you bring)
  • 1-2 pairs of shoes (comfortable walking shoes + sandals or dressy flats)
  • Sleepwear
  • Swimwear (if needed)

You’ll rewear items, mixing and matching, or do a small laundry load if needed. You will adjust list for time of year and weather. Seasonal list below will help.

Picking a color palette so everything goes well together will make packing even easier with the mixing and matching. Consider neutral bottoms and choose toops with some color to give you variety.

👟 Shoes

Sometimes I bring three pairs, but only if they are small enough for two pairs to fit in one shoe bag. For example, flip flops and sandlas, and a pair of sneakers. Or if I wear my bulkiest shoes on the plane, I may be able to fit three. Otherwise, stick with two.

  • 1 pair of walkable shoes (bulkier and better to wear on plane)
  • 1-2 pair of sandals, flip flops, or dressy shoes

To save more space you can stuff socks or rolled up accessories inside your pair of shoes.

🪥 Toiletries

Make sure all products you pack are travel-sized to meet TSA requirements. Many travel products come in small bottles, but you can purchase empty travel bottles in sets and fill them with your favorite products.

I like to use a permanent marker to label these small travel bottles so I don’t have to guess what is in them, whether it’s my face wash or shampoo. Trust me, I learned this trick the hard way.

Lastly, hotels and other accommodations offer travel-sized toiletries, saving you space if you don’t care for specific items or brands.

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Travel-sized shampoo and conditioner
  • Body wash or bar soap
  • Deodorant
  • Razor
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Hair ties or clips
  • Makeup essentials (inside a small pouch if possible)
  • Sunscreen
  • Moisturizer and lip balm
  • Hand sanitizer/wipes
  • Contact lens solution and extra lenses (if needed)
  • Prescription medications (and a copy of the prescription/original bottle)

📷 Technology & Travel Gadgets

This is an extensive list; you may not need a fraction of my list. But at least it gives you a variety to cover your needs, whether a short trip, a work trip, or a more extended vacation.

  • Phone and charger
  • Phone Stand (used on a plane to hold a phone or in the hotel)
  • Portable charger/power bank
  • Headphones or earbuds
  • Tablet (optional)
  • Travel adapter for electrical plug (if needed)
  • Power strip (optional for charging multiple devices)
  • Camera (if not using your phone)
  • Laptop (if essential for work or travel needs)

✈️ Travel Essentials

This list includes things for domestic and overseas trips. Keeping the essential documents in one folder will make it easy to access everything quickly and keep them safe. I like to take a paper copy of my travel plans to be safe.

  • Passport and ID
  • Boarding passes or e-ticket
  • Itinerary and hotel information (printed or digital)
  • Travel insurance documents
  • Credit cards and some local currency
  • Reusable water bottle (there are collapsable water bottles for saving space)
  • Snacks (for the flight or on-the-go)
  • Sunglasses
  • Sleep mask and travel pillow (if long flight)

🌎 Extra Items and Personal Stuff

These items are entirely optional. I find having a laundry bag helpful if I need to separate dirty clothes, especially if I am in more than one hotel during a trip and must repack my bag and keep my clean clothes fresh. I also have found having a spare tote bag helpful if I need help carrying things during a trip or need extra space.

I like having comfort items while on a flight and putting them in pockets of my backpack that are packed well and easy to get to so I am not struggling to find things or worried about things falling out on the plane.

  • Reading material (books, magazines, or a tablet)
  • Small laundry bag (for dirty clothes)
  • Foldable tote bag (for overflow, day trips, or shopping)
  • Journal and pen (for notes or journaling)
  • Snacks, gum, mints (for plane or layovers)
  • Travel-sized laundry detergent (for hand-washing clothes)

🧳 Using The Right-Sized Luggage

Using a carry-on only is possible, but only if you ensure you have the right-sized luggage for the length of your trip. I have a couple of different sizes of ‘smaller’ pieces of luggage, so I can decide depending on how long I will be gone.

Some people bring more significant pieces of luggage on the plane and struggle to fit them in the overhead compartment. I don’t get how they got through security with the more significant pieces. The downside, from what I have seen a couple of times, is that people end up having to gate-check a bag because it’s too big or doesn’t fit.

These are the guidelines for luggage size for most major airlines, but if in doubt, double-check with the airline you are traveling on.

International Airlines21.5 x 15.5 x 9 inches

Packing Tips for Carry-On Only Trips

You can practice ahead of the trip how to pack, save space, and make the most of the carry-on you use for your trip. With each trip you take, you will become more efficient and effective in your preparation and packing.

Travel-Friendly Wardrobe Planning

Planning outfits that you can mix and match and wear more than once will help save space. This creates more outfit options without taking up space.

Use Packing Cubes

Packing cubes come in many different sizes. They help keep other types of clothing separate and make things easier to find.

You can also use plastic compression bags to pack your clothes more efficiently. However, with the compression bags, ensure you don’t overpack, even though the items will be flatter. Also, avoid using the kind that requires a vacuum to compress; instead, opt for the ones that you roll to squeeze out the air.

Rolling Clothes

For most fabrics, rolling clothes instead of folding them saves space and reduces wrinkles. This is particularly useful for lightweight fabrics, such as T-shirts, dresses, and pants. However, some fabrics may be best folded. They can be folded into ‘thirds’ to save space or stored in the packing cubes.

Wear Bulky Clothes on the Plane

To save space in your carry-on, consider wearing your heaviest shoes and outerwear (such as sneakers, boots, or jackets) during your flight. You can always take them off and store them in the overhead compartment if you get warm.

Packing a Carry-On Only Backpack

5 Quick Tips for Packing a Carry-On-Only Backpack

Having my backpack is essential for me when traveling. On one trip, my husband brought no bag on the plane; he kept everything in his pockets. If you don’t want to carry anything, want to leave work behind, and have little to take, you could pull that off.

However, I like having options, being hands-free, and knowing everything is secure, especially when going through TSA security. If you have Clear or TSA PreCheck, you will not have to unload items from your bags, unlike in regular TSA security lines.

1. Prioritize Easy Access to Important Items

Keep your passport, ID, boarding pass, and phone in a small pouch or an easily accessible front pocket. You can grab them quickly at security or during boarding without unpacking your entire bag.

2. Pack a Small In-Flight Comfort Kit

Include essentials like headphones, an eye mask, a neck pillow, lip balm, and hand sanitizer in a separate pouch for easy access during the flight. This pouch can be placed at the top of your backpack so you can pull it out and keep it at your seat. If not in a pouch, I like using the smaller zipper pockets for these smaller items.

3. Roll Your Clothes and Use Packing Cubes

If you’re packing clothes in your backpack as your carry-on, roll them tightly and use packing cubes to organize and compress items. This helps keep your bag neat and maximizes space, especially for overnight or longer trips.

4. Limit Liquids and Keep Them Organized

Place all liquids (toiletries, hand sanitizer, etc.) in a clear, resealable bag and pack it near the top of your backpack for easy removal at security. The size of the containers allowed is 3.4 oz.

5. Keep Electronics and Chargers Handy

Pack your laptop, tablet, and chargers in a laptop sleeve or compartment. Make sure they’re accessible, especially if you’ll need to remove them at security. Keep a portable charger handy if you need to charge your phone mid-flight.

When organizing your backpack efficiently, plan out each compartment and pocket. This will give you quick and easy access to everything you need for a comfortable flight, without having to dig through your bag. This is my ideal plan; no one wants to dig when crammed in a small space!

Carry-On Packing For The Seasons

Above, I gave a general packing list for a 7-day vacation. Now I’ll share more specifics for each season. You can also use these suggestions when you are going to other part of the counrty that has different weather and climate than where you are coming from.

It’s cooling off, and you want to be ready for changes in weather in many places in the U.S. and around the world.

If your feet get cold on the plane, and boots are comfortable, you could wear them on travel day to save space.

If you feel comfortable, you can wear the bulkiest items on the plane. Since winter clothes are bulkier, you can compress them in a compression bag or cubes to save space. A neutral or same-color palette will help with mix-and-match.

FAQs

There is no one way or wrong way to pack. The more you experiment, the more confident you will get in your packing.

What is the 5 4 3 2 1 packing rule?

What this packing rule stands for is:

  • 5 Tops – long sleeve, short sleeve, tanks, blouses
  • 4 Bottoms – pants, shorts, skirts, or leggings
  • 3 Outer layers – Jackets, sweaters, hoodies, depending on the weather
  • 2 Pairs of shoes – One for walking and one for dressier occasions or weather-specific
  • 1 One-piece outfit – Like a sundress, romper, jumpsuit (optional)

Adjust according to the season or type of destination.

What cannot go in a carry-on bag?

The same type of items that you wouldn’t put in your purse or backpack to go through TSA, you should also not put in a carry-on bag or suitcase. These items include:

  • Sharp items like knives, box cutters
    • Scissors
    • Loose razor blades; disposable razors are allowed
  • Hazardous materials like firearms, including replicas (toy guns)
    • Self-defense sprays
    • Explosive materials
    • Lighters
  • Liquids over 3.4 oz (100 mL)
    • Any single liquid items, such as shampoo, lotion, drinks, etc.
    • All liquids, gels, creams, and aerosols need to fit in a single quart-sized bag
    • Exceptions: Medications, baby formula, and breast milk. Declare at TSA
  • Tools over 7 inches long
  • Sport Equipment
    • Bats, clubs, ski poles, hockey sticks, etc. (I can’t imagine someone doing this, but you never know!)

If you are in doubt, visit the TSA website or call to ask. Things change, and you want to be sure you have the up-to-date info.

What you CAN put in your Carry-on:

  • Clothes, shoes, books
  • Electronics, but be sure your bag doesn’t get checked when you’re on the plane with these valuables in it.*** Never put valuables in a checked bag.
  • Toiletries under 3.4
  • Snacks
  • An empty water bottle
  • Medications, labeled in the original bottle to be safe
  • Jewelry, camera, valuable***

Remember, do not pack anything that is full-sized. Lotion, hairspray, shampoo, etc.

Is deodorant allowed in carry-on baggage in international flights?

Yes, deodorant is allowed in carry-on baggage on international flights; however, the type of deodorant matters.

Solid or stick deodorants can be packed in your carry-on with no issues. However, liquid, gel, cream, or spray deodorants must adhere to the 3.4 oz (100 mL) limit and be placed in a quart-sized clear liquid bag at TSA security.

Always check the specific airline and country regulations, and especially follow TSA rules for liquids. If you don’t want to deal with the clear liquid bag for other kinds of deodorant, you could use a solid or stick just for travel and leave it in your toiletry bag.

Can you fly internationally with food in a carry-on?

Yes, you can bring food on international flights in your carry-on. However, there are restrictions. Solid foods, such as sandwiches, granola bars, crackers, or dried fruit, are generally allowed. Liquids or spreadable items (such as yogurt, peanut butter, or sauces) need to follow the 3.4 oz (100 mL) liquid rule.

Customs regulations vary by country, and some may prohibit bringing in fresh produce, meat, or dairy, even if it was allowed on the plane. Always check the arrival country’s rules to avoid any surprises and having your food confiscated at customs.

Final Thoughts About Only Packing a Carry-On

Many tricks and tools can be used to make carry-on packing easier and more efficient. Additionally, like most things in life, the more we do it, the easier it becomes.

I became skilled, like MacGyver, at packing by having young kids and ensuring I always had the necessary supplies on hand. For our diaper bag, I always used backpacks. Due to the numerous pockets and zippers, they helped me stay very organized and access things easily.

Have a fun trip, knowing you’ve prepared efficiently using your carry-on-only packing list, and have confidence that you’ve got everything you need for your upcoming trip.
