Best Things People Can Do On A Cruise Ship At Night

One thing I enjoy about cruises is the variety of activities throughout the day. We start with breakfast and coffee, and then we may have a port with planned activities or activities scheduled for the day onboard. Then, in the afternoon, we have a little downtime and nighttime activities on the ship.

This type of schedule can be similar to a theme park vacation or an all-inclusive resort. Still, I enjoy being on the ship and having everything so close, with a wide variety of options and lots of fun activities to enjoy and things to do on a cruise ship at night.

Things To Do On A Cruise Ship At Night

After a fun day of exploring different ports on your cruise journey, an evening on the ship may be something to look forward to. Some people like having dinner and retiring to their room.

Others get a second wind and want to take advantage of the cruise ship offers. There are many fun things to do on a cruise ship at night, varying from ship to ship and cruise line to cruise line.

Researching in advance or asking your travel planner what you can expect onboard at night can help you decide which boat and destination is right for you. It is great that each ship has a variety of activities to do since not everything is for everybody. You will find a few things to do at night on the boat that will be perfect for you and those you are traveling with!

1. Quality Entertainment and Shows

Almost every ship offers evening entertainment that varies from night to night. These entertainment shows can include:

  • Musical productions
  • Dancing
  • Live bands
  • Game shows
  • Magic shows
  • Illusionists
  • Comedians
  • and more!

There is a wide variety, and most ships offer a few choices that change themes throughout your trip.

While you can show up at the theatre or wherever the event is without a ticket, I recommend arriving a little early if the seating is limited.

I like to scout out these areas in advance to see what the space looks like and get an idea of how many seats are available. I have been surprised a couple of times by how fast seats fill.

Examples of quality shows you may see on major cruise lines include Cats, Hairspray, and Grease on the Royal Caribbean cruise line. On Norweigan ships, they have Footloose, Jersey Boys, and other shows.

Disney cruise line presents shows such as Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. Research in advance when choosing a ship, as certain ships offer specific shows.

Your travel planner can also help you find shows on ships and destinations that interest you.

It is amazing how professional the shows and music sets are! From my own experiences, I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of talent and entertainment at night on different cruise lines. There was only one act that my husband and I didn’t care for on one of our cruises, but we made fun to entertain ourselves, poking fun at the experience. The same piano duo each night with different themes for their songs . . . . and yet they sounded the same every set . . . . . and very dry. However, two other areas offered live music, which was high-quality jazz, and another stage was a rock band.

2. Dining and Culinary Experiences

I try not to be obsessed with food or get excited about eating, but on a cruise ship, it is hard not to want to do both.

Food is what you mostly hear from people regarding recommendations about certain cruise lines or even specific boats since they can vary.

Food can be a deciding factor when choosing which ship to sail on if delicious food and culinary experiences are essential to you. Good food is important to some people because it is part of the cruising experience.

Many cruise lines work hard to do just that: make the food and the dining experience one that will be shared by those who sailed with them, and they will share with family and friends the experience they had.

Some of the entertainment onboard may include cooking demonstrations. I was excited to eat dinner one night during our Alaskan cruise because I had watched the salmon cooking demo in the main theatre. I was also happy to get the recipe card; dinner was delicious!

Here are a few examples of restaurants:

🍴 Grab and Go – great for any time of day, including the evening if you get night munchies. The hours vary on each cruise line.

🍴 Later Dining Reservations – Sit down the dining room if you’d rather have an enjoyable meal when it isn’t as crowded and you don’t feel rushed to grab a seat at a show.

🍴 Speciality Dining – Later reservations at a specialty restaurant and a quality dining experience.

Whether you are on a 3-night cruise or a 7-night cruise, picking your dining experiences, whether a casual or a cruise ship formal night, you can have fantastic dining and culinary experiences!

3. Nighttime Deck Activities and Outdoor Movies

Many cruise lines offer nighttime activities on the main deck, such as games, movies, crafts, and more. These activities can be for both kids and adults. Researching what is offered on the ship you are interested in is a good idea if you want to make sure it has activities that interest you or are enjoyable for your family.

🚢 Nighttime Games

Games can be played during the day, but there is something about having fun with nighttime games. Adventures at night on the deck may include:

  • Shuffleboard
  • Cornhole
  • Jenga

There are also fun ball games like:

  • 🏀 Basketball
  • 🏓 Ping pong
  • ⛳ Mini golf
  • 🏓 Pickleball

Some cruisers love the interactive or trivia game night on deck, where guests can team up and compete for prizes.

Outdoor Movie Night

Many cruise lines offer ‘Movies on Deck.’ This fun experience usually offers movie snacks and different ways to lounge while watching a movie under the stars.

They have large poolside screens and typically show family-friendly films. With a fun environment, it’s a fun way to cozy up with blankets, snacks fpr everyone, and cocktails for adults.

Other Nighttime Adventures

Some ships offer mini golf; others even have nighttime glow-in-the-dark mini golf! Some ships, like Royal Caribbean, also offer glow-in-the-dark laser tag. If you love ‘glowing,’ Norweigan Cruise Line provides a Glow Party on several boats.

4. Bars, Lounges, and Nightclubs

Every ship has bars, lounges, and some form of nightclub. Each boat differs in size and music offering, but the nightclub is always a go-to each evening you are on the ship. Ships offer basic drinks at the bar as well as specialty drinks. Examples of unique bars, lounges, and nightclubs include drinks that are served smoky or in fancy glassware, including a treasure chest and glow-in-the-dark drinks.

Drink Packages

Many cruise lines offer a variety of drink packages. You may want to choose this before your trip; one less thing to do when you get on board. The drink packages are not just for alcoholic drinks but can include soft drinks and other combinations of drinks.

Typically, the drink packages do not include drinks for room service or the drinks in the mini fridges in the room. Please double-check so you are informed about the specific cruise line you are sailing on.

Some drink packages have specific guidelines. For example, we tried their drink package when we sailed on the Holland America cruise line. It comes with 15 drinks per person per day, with a limit of drinks up to $11. We got our package with a special they were offering at the time. We stocked up on bottled and canned drinks daily and a few alcoholic beverages while at shows. With our experience, we won’t do that again, especially without the special.

5. Casino and Gaming

Gaming at sea is a popular activity for many cruisers. Some of the activities at night they offer in the casino include:

🎰 Slot machines and game tables

🎰 Poker tournaments

🎰 Themed casino nights – dress up with prizes for theme

🎰 VIP game rooms

Most cruise lines offer gambling, but a few do not. Disney Cruise Line, Viking Cruise Line, American Cruise Line, expedition cruises, cruises around Hawaii, and a few others do not offer a casino and gambling aboard.

6. Night at The Spa: Relaxation & Wellness Options

You may not want to hang out at a lounge each night, dance at the disco, or get the most out of a ‘drink’ package. There are other options.

🧘 Late-Night Spa Treatment

You can make appointments to get an evening massage, facial, or other body treatments.

🧘 Pools and Spas

Enjoy a relaxing evening in a heated pool or the sauna.

🧘 Classes for Meditation and Yoga

Some ships offer evening yoga to help you unwind and have a good night’s sleep.

🧘 Quiet Lounges and Libraries

There are several low-key areas where you can curl up with a book, work on a puzzle, or get lost in watching the ocean and listening to the water.

Not everything on a cruise has to be nonstop action. Unwinding and resting can be just as refreshing and enjoyable.

7. Things for Kids to Do at Night on Cruise

Nighttime activities for kids are organized to be safe and supervised but also fun! This allows the adults to have some downtime or a fun evening of their own. Kids love to have adventures, and here are a few of the nighttime activities kids:

🎮 Late Night Youth Clubs

Many cruise lines offer activities that extend into the evening for the kids. They group the activities by age group so the activities fit perfectly. Some examples include:

  • Pajama parties
  • Karaoke
  • Talent Shows

Norweigan Cruise Line has the “Splash Academy,” where they offer kids’ themed parties for different age groups. Some of the activities they offer include spy-themed activities and circus-skilled workshops.

Royal Caribbean offers “Adventure Ocean,” a “late-night party zone” with many fun activities.

🎮 Themed Night Activities

Having themed nights on board allows for activities to be similar but different and new! Some themes include Norwegian Cruise Line’s glow dance parties, Pirates Night on Disney Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean’s ‘dance-offs’ for the whole family.

🎮 Arcades and Gaming

Older kids will enjoy arcades and gaming. Some cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean and Carnival, offer virtual reality zones.

Some VR zones are available for adults, too! Virtual reality games can include racing games, immersive activities, shooting games, and more.

🎮 Nighttime Educational Programs and Workshops

Ships like offering kids ‘edutainment’ during the day and evening! Some activities can include science experiments, like volcano making, as well as crafts and slime.

Researching what each ship offers on the cruise line you choose for your trip will allow you to see in advance what activities your kids can expect, and they can get even more excited about the trip!

8. Nighttime Activities for Solo Cruisers

There isn’t much difference in activity options for solo travelers. Some people enjoy traveling alone, and cruising is no different. It’s awesome that traveling alone on a cruise doesn’t keep people from exploring and seeing the world.

I am trying this next year. I will be on a boat with other colleagues, but I’m getting my own cabin and will do some activities on my own. I’m excited!

If you are traveling alone on a cruise, which many people do, it’s nice to know that you are welcome anywhere, you will never be alone, unless you want to be. Plus, there is so much you can do for fun at nighttime on the cruise, and it doesn’t matter that you travel alone.

If you want to meet people, you can easily meet a group and make friends quickly if you want people to do activities with. But if you enjoy being alone, you can do that and still have plenty to do.

FAQs

Sometimes the activities can go late into the night, both on and off the ship.

Do any cruises stay overnight?

Yes, many cruise lines offer overnight or late-night port stays. It’s perfect if you want to experience a destination’s nightlife or avoid rushing back to the ship.

Cruise lines’ examples for overnight stays include:

  • Virgin Voyages – Overnight on Mediterranean itineraries—there is no curfew—you can come and go as you please; shuttles often run late at night
  • Azamara – Known for destination immersion—frequent overnight or extended port stays in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, plus evening cultural events like symphonies and local performances
  • Princess Cruises – The “More Ashore” program includes overnight stays or late-night departures
  • Celebrity Cruises – Up to 50% of itineraries feature overnight stays
  • Silversea Cruises – Around one-third of sailings include overnight port calls
  • SeaDream Yacht Club – Offers late-night departures and full overnight stays in upscale destinations
  • MSC Cruises – Overnight at their private island in the Bahamas—and occasional late-night departures in the Mediterranean
  • Norwegian Cruise Line – Expanded itineraries now feature extended stays—like inter-island Hawaii cruises

Being on a cruise that includes overnight stays allows for a deeper immersion in the nightlife, sightseeing, and local culture. You have more time to stay out to experience a special dinner, catch a show on shore, or enjoy the nightlife.

It also gives you the flexibility to return late to the ship or stay ashore overnight. You must check curfew policies to avoid any surprises.

Can you stay up all night on a cruise?

Yes, you can stay up all night on a cruise ship, although your options become more limited as the night progresses. Cruise ships don’t enforce a bedtime, and you’re free to roam the decks, relax in lounges, or even order late-night snacks or room service.

Some lines, like Virgin Voyages, Carnival, and Royal Caribbean, cater exceptionally well to night owls, offering lively nightclubs, late-night food venues (like 24-hour pizza), and bustling casinos that often stay open into the early morning hours while at sea. You might also find quiet spots, such as observation lounges or upper decks, perfect for stargazing or watching the sunrise.

That said, not everything remains open. Pools, shops, spas, and kids’ clubs typically close by midnight or earlier, and the ship grows noticeably quieter after 1–2 AM.

While you might find a few other night owls out and about, it’s also a peaceful time if you enjoy solitude. Security is still active, and crew members may check in if you’re wandering alone to ensure your safety.

Overall, while cruise nightlife tapers off in the early morning hours, staying up all night is possible, whether you’re dancing at a silent disco, playing blackjack, or enjoying a peaceful walk under the stars.

Can you go in the pool at night on a cruise?

Most cruise ships have set pool hours, typically opening in the morning and closing by late evening, usually between 8 PM and 10 PM. Swimming at night is generally not allowed for safety reasons, including the absence of lifeguards, reduced visibility, and to prevent disturbances to guests.

While pools close, some ships keep hot tubs or whirlpools open later as a safer, relaxing alternative. For nighttime fun, many ships offer deck parties, outdoor movies, lounges, and stargazing spots. Pool hours can vary by ship and itinerary, so it’s always a good idea to check the schedule before your cruise.

Final Thoughts on Nighttime Cruise Activities

With so many options for nighttime activities on a cruise ship, the fun and excitement never stop—except maybe at 12 a.m. for breakfast.

You will receive a ‘daily cruise planning sheet’ each day to help you plan your activities for that night. I like knowing in advance because I enjoy my daytime activities and excursions and am also excited about the evening shows and performances.

Even if you are tired and need a relaxing night off, there are plenty of spaces on board where you can put your feet up and read, do a puzzle, or turn in early for the night. Because there are activities every night, you’ll never feel like you have missed out if you need a night to rest.

There is a nice variety of the best things people can do on a cruise ship at night for adults, families, and kids! You will never feel bored, and there is always something going on!
