The Ultimate Guide to Things to Do in Golden, Colorado in 2026

LOOKING FOR THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN GOLDEN, COLORADO?

Golden, Colorado, may be just 20 minutes from Downtown Denver, but it feels like a different world, with a small-town feel. With the mountain backdrop, historic downtown, and a river that runs right through the heart of it, Golden blends small-town charm with big adventure.

Whether you’re planning a day trip, a complete weekend getaway, or want to uncover some hidden gems, this guide will walk you through it all.

From tubing down Clear Creek and sipping craft beer at a tucked-away brewery to wandering a trail lined with dinosaur tracks and joining in on quirky seasonal festivals, Golden has something for everyone.

I’ll also share a sample weekend itinerary so you can make the most of your time here without missing the best spots.

Best Things to Do in Golden, Colorado

For a small-town feel, Golden offers a lot to do. Many areas make up Golden, including Downtown Golden, surrounding foothill areas, trails and golf courses, museums, and a growing college campus, the Colorado School of Mines.

I live in Golden, but it is outside the downtown area. Even for me, it feels like stepping into a fun, historical old town when I go downtown to eat or walk around.

Explore Historic Downtown Golden

If you are looking for souvenirs or a western-style outfit, there is a nice variety of shops and boutiques on and near the main street of downtown Golden.

The Golden Visitor’s Center is located at the north end of Washington Avenue (the main street), where you can find an abundance of brochures and maps for more information on trails, events, and activities in and beyond the Golden area.

Top Downtown Golden Shops

If you love browsing unique boutiques, Downtown Golden won’t disappoint. Here are some standouts worth popping into along or near Washington Avenue:

  1. Yo Colorado – A Golden-based lifestyle brand with colorful Colorado hats, hoodies, and apparel that locals and travelers love. Perfect for a souvenir you’ll actually wear.
  2. Blue Moose Trading Company – Fun and colorful souvenirs, jewelry, and Rocky Mountain–inspired gifts.
  3. Truly BoHotique – A fun boutique blending boho-style clothing, accessories, and gifts with a modern mountain-town twist.
  4. Toad and Co – Cute and cozy mountain vibe wear for men and women.
  5. Marrygrams Cards & Gifts – Unique gifts and cards with a unique local style.

Golden History Museum & Park

Tucked away next to Clear Creek, you will find the Golden History Museum, which covers the history of Golden, Colorado, and beyond. It is a free museum, with the option to donate. There’s a lot to learn, helpful staff, and interactive exhibits that make it an excellent stop for all ages.

On the south side, directly across the river, is the Golden Historical Park. The park is also a free outdoor walking museum, where you can explore the buildings and activities of the Old West. You may see school groups on tours, but you can also walk at your leisure AND do a self-guided tour, and learn more about Old Golden.

Clear Creek path and river

Clear Creek Activities

One of my favorite things to do is walk along Clear Creek when going into town. It runs a good length along the river, where you can watch tubbers if it’s the season, cross over bridges, or even follow it long enough that it takes you to extended dirt trails if you want a little longer hike.

Other activities include tubing, kayaking, and fishing, depending on the season. At times, the water can rise and run fast, so they have a flag system in place to keep people doing activities on the river safe.

Companies in downtown offer equipment for activities on the Clear Creek if you don’t have tubes or kayaks, and bikes for riding along the creek or on extended bike paths around Golden.

Both are located near the river, within walking distance. Be aware that if you decide to tube or kayak, there is no transportation to the starting point where you enter the water.

You will walk along the river on the sidewalk, with many entry points available. Both sports shops are within walking distance of the exit point where most people leave the water. But it is still a few blocks away.

Iconic Attractions

These attractions are outside of the downtown area. The brewery tour is within a few blocks of Washington Avenue, and the other two activities are within a short driving distance.

  • Coors Brewery Tour – This 90-minute tour includes the history and process of Coors Beer, as well as samples. It is the largest brewery site in the world. Reserve your tickets online.
  • Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave One of the most popular attractions in the Denver/Golden area, is located on the beautiful Lookout Mountain. You can walk the grounds and enjoy events and activities throughout the year.
  • Colorado Railroad Museum – Fun for every age! You can take a tour, ride on a train, and enjoy many other activities!

Golden Hidden Gems You’ll Love

Here are some unique finds that will take you out of downtown. You can walk to the Colorado School of Mines campus, but for the others, you will need transportation. Golden offers a shuttle service, the “Ore Cart”, to help get around the Golden area. Check out their site for their routes.

  • Foothills Art Center (Astor House) – Foothills Art Center has two locations, one for classes and one for the gallery, exhibits, and presentations. It’s a new, beautiful space, restored from what was the Astor House Museum.
  • Calvary Episcopal Church is a historic church that offers services on both Saturday and Sunday. Check the website for the most current schedule.
  • Triceratops Trail – A surprisingly tucked-away trail that is fun to explore. About a 1.5-mile trail, an out-and-back, where you can discover layers of rock and dinosaur tracks! Check the link for parking suggestions.
  • Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum – A variety of exhibits, events, and classes are available. They also offer tours for adults and school groups.
  • Mines Museum of Earth Science – Visit this huge museum on the School of Mines Campus, which is home to many minerals, fossils, and other cool Earth Science-related objects.
  • Miner Alley Playhouse – This new theatre in downtown Golden offers year-round shows for all ages.
  • Mother Cabrini Shrine – Situated on Lookout Mountain, this serene shrine includes a beautiful chapel, gift shop, and stairs to a 22-foot Sacred Heart of Jesus statue. A peaceful, reflective spot that blends history and spirituality. I love visiting this place, it’s so calming and peaceful.

FAQS

Last questions to help you make the best choices for your next Golden adventure!

When are the best times of year to visit Golden?

Golden is beautiful year-round, but the best times to visit Golden, Colorado, are in the spring and fall when the weather is milder, the trails are colorful, and downtown events are in full swing. Summer is also popular for tubing Clear Creek and enjoying outdoor festivals, though it can get busy on weekends. If you love snow and cozy vibes, winter brings fewer crowds and a festive atmosphere, especially during Golden’s holiday events.

What are the best ways to get around Golden?

Downtown Golden is very walkable, so you can easily explore shops, restaurants, and Clear Creek on foot. For longer trips, biking is popular thanks to nearby trails, and rideshares or the free Golden Shuttle (in summer months) make it easy to get around without a car. If you’re planning day trips into the mountains or to Denver, having your own vehicle is the most convenient option.

Is parking easy in Golden, Colorado?

Parking in Golden is easier than in most Colorado towns, but spots can fill up quickly on weekends and during events. Downtown offers both free and paid public lots, plus 2-hour street parking near Washington Avenue.

If you’re tubing Clear Creek or visiting Coors, plan to arrive early or use the free shuttle (summer only) to avoid parking headaches. There is also free parking about three blocks from Washington Avenue, near the Coors Brewery, during the summer months.

What are some altitude tips when visiting Golden?

Golden sits at about 5,675 feet above sea level, which is higher than many visitors are used to. To avoid altitude sickness, drink plenty of water, take it easy on your first day, and limit alcohol until you’ve adjusted. Pack and use sunscreen too. The sun is stronger at elevation, and if you’re heading into nearby mountain trails, expect thinner air and pace yourself on hikes.

Final Thoughts on Things to Do in Golden, Colorado

Golden may be small, but it’s packed with charm, history, and adventure. Whether you’re floating down Clear Creek, sipping a local craft beer, or strolling under the “Howdy Folks!” arch downtown, Golden has a lot to experience year-round.
