Let’s dive into the perfect 3-day itinerary San Diego visitors will love!

3 Day Itinerary For San Diego

San Diego offers a wide range of activities, allowing you to create an itinerary that spans from busy, adventure-packed days to relaxed, sunny beach days. This beautiful coastal city is ideal for couples and families who love the outdoors and spending time together exploring.

San Diego is one of my favorite coastal cities to visit. Each time I go, whether with my family or my husband, the experience is different. I would be happy to do some of the activities again on a future trip, such as visiting the San Diego Zoo, but there are other things I haven’t explored yet.

San Diego Activities

You will easily be able to fill three days, and everyone will be happy with the San Diego itinerary you create. If you want to venture beyond the downtown area, consider extending your trip. The suggestions given for building a fun three-day itinerary are based on being in the San Diego downtown area.

San Diego Beaches

There is a nice variety of beaches around the downtown San Diego area. The locations I share are either within walking, biking, or scooter distance, or Uber distance if you don’t have your car.

🏖️ Coronado Island Central Beach

This beach is perfect for both couples and families. Coronado Beach features soft, white sand and gentle waves. It’s also ideal for romantic walks or safe swimming with kids. It’s also where you’ll find the famous Hotel del Coronado backdrop, perfect for gorgeous photo opportunities, plus nearby beachfront dining and drinks.

You can get there by taking a Ferry Ride from Downtown. Pick it up at the Broadway Pier or Convention Center and get dropped off at the Coronado Ferry Landing. Then, it’s a free shuttle or a short Uber ride to the beach. You can also take an Uber from downtown, which is about 10–15 minutes away, and enjoy the ride over the Coronado Bridge. This beach is a relaxed, clean, and scenic spot with a mix of locals and travelers.

🏖️ Silver Strand State Beach

This beach is peaceful and less crowded than some others. It’s ideal for a relaxing beach day with space to spread out. There are also bike and walking trails nearby. Great for couples or families who want to combine a beach day with a scenic ride.

To get there, you can take an Uber from downtown, which is about 20–25 minutes down the Silver Strand scenic drive. It is not walkable from downtown and not accessible by the Coronado ferry, so transportation is required.

This beach is serene and natural, perfect for chill beach lovers but not for those seeking shops and dining options.

Bike rentals are available near Silver Strand State Beach but not directly on the beach itself. On Coronado Island (North End), bike rentals are located close to the starting point of the Strand.

Bike rental options for Silver Strand State Beach are just a 5–10 minute ride from the start of the Silver Strand bike path and include:

Ride Along the Silver Strand Bikeway

  • The Silver Strand Bikeway is one of the most scenic and flat paths in San Diego, stretching from Coronado down to Imperial Beach.
  • It’s perfect for couples and safe for families; in some areas, it’s separate from car traffic, with ocean views on one side and a bay on the other.
  • Incredible scenery — ocean, dunes, and sometimes dolphins!
  • You could bring a picnic — there are shaded tables and spots along the way.
  • If you like to bike ride and want an extra challenge, there is the ‘Bayshore Byway,’ a 24-mile stretch ride.

If you’re not bringing your own bikes, plan to start your beach day in Coronado, rent your bikes there, and then cruise down the Strand toward the state beach. It turns your beach day into a memorable adventure.

🏖️ Harbor Island Park/Beachfront

This beach offers pretty views of the city skyline, particularly at sunset, making it an ideal spot for photos or a romantic picnic. It also features flat paths and open lawns, which are ideal for strollers, bikes, and children to run around.

You can get there by Uber from downtown, which takes approximately 5–10 minutes. It’s also walkable from the Embarcadero area, about a 20–30 minute stroll for active walkers.

Harbor Island Park and the beachfront are calm and scenic; although it’s not a swimming beach, it’s lovely for a laid-back afternoon or picnic.

🏖️ Spanish Landing Park Beach

Spanish Landing Park Beach is great for both couples and families. There are views of sailboats and planes, which are right across from the airport. Kids will enjoy watching the planes!

It also offers shaded picnic areas, which makes it easy to spend time on the beach without worrying about bringing an umbrella.

You can get there by Uber from downtown in about 10 minutes. You can also walk from the Little Italy area, which is approximately 25 minutes away if you’re up for a stroll.

This beach is a local favorite, offering a peaceful atmosphere that’s free from crowds.

🏖️ Shelter Island Shoreline Park

This beach offers great fishing spots and public art. It features a quiet shoreline with numerous fun activities to explore. This includes palm-tree-lined paths and breezes from the bay. It is ideal for romantic walks or biking with kids.

You can get there by Uber from downtown, which takes approximately 10–15 minutes; it’s a relatively easy ride. It is not a destination you would walk to because of the distance and limited sidewalks. There is plenty of free parking available if you have a car.

It offers pretty views, no waves, but big views and relaxing vibes. Shelter Island Shoreline Park is a special place, a hidden gem, that feels like a peaceful retreat, offering stunning harbor views.

It is wonderful at sunset or at night when the skyline comes alive with lights. It also features wide-open grassy areas, palm trees, picnic spots, and numerous benches. This shoreline park is far less crowded than the Embarcadero or Seaport Village area.

It’s ideal for quiet moments, reading, or a romantic picnic.

🏖️ Glorietta Bay Park

Glorietta Bay Park features calm bay waters, making it the perfect alternative to ocean waves for young kids. This park also features restrooms, shade trees, and a grassy area. It’s a parent’s dream to have an easy location to enjoy.

You can get there by ferry to Coronado, then a short Uber or bike ride. You can also take an Uber from downtown, which is about a 15-minute ride, depending on traffic.

It has a nice family vibe — peaceful, convenient, and not crowded like the main beach.

🏖️ South Mission Beach

South Mission Beach features numerous beach volleyball courts where couples or teens can join in or watch pickup games. There are lots of opportunities for people-watching if you like that sort of thing!

This beach also has a boardwalk, food, and fun. Nearby, Belmont Park has treats and classic SoCal vibes.

You can get there by Uber from downtown, which will take about 20–25 minutes, depending on the traffic. It’s not walkable from downtown.

The vibe of this beach is active, upbeat, and more lively than the others, making it perfect for a group that wants energy and fun.

🏖️ Embarcadero Marina Park

Embarcadero Marina Park has wonderful views of yachts, ships, and the bay. It’s super scenic, with many spots to sit and relax.

It’s also close to Seaport Village, so it’s easy to grab snacks, rent bikes, or ride the carousel.

You can get there by walking from Gaslamp, Little Italy, or anywhere near the bayfront. It’s not a “beachy” beach, but a fantastic place to lie out a blanket, enjoy the breeze, and people-watch.

🏖️ Seaport Village Bayfront

The Seaport area is a great place to walk around, check out the shops, enjoy ice cream, and explore waterfront paths — perfect for a low-key beach day vibe without the sand.

Here, you can enjoy street performers and live music; there is always something fun happening, especially on weekends.

You can get there easily since it is walkable from anywhere downtown, especially the Marina District and Gaslamp area.

The Seaport Village is the perfect casual stop if you want views and vibes without packing beach gear.

Embarcadero Marina Park and Seaport Village don’t replace the true ocean beaches, such as Coronado or South Mission. Still, they offer a way to enjoy the water without needing a car or ferry.

3 day itinerary for San Diego

Coronado Island

You can explore Coronado Island by car, going over the Coronado Bridge, or by the ferry from downtown San Diego. There are also bike rentals available to get around the island and to rent before you get on the ferry to Coronado Island.

San Diego Bay

San Diego Bay is a beautiful area that stretches along downtown and the Embarcadero. It offers incredible views and a convenient location for walking.

This area is perfect for a casual day of exploring, whether you’re strolling along the harbor, hopping on a harbor cruise, riding bikes on the bayfront path, or grabbing fish tacos with a view. Popular stops along the Bay include the USS Midway Museum, Seaport Village, The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park (for outdoor concerts), and Waterfront Park, which has fountains and a large playground great for kids. You can also catch the Coronado Ferry from here or book a sunset sail, a glowing nighttime pedal boat, or a whale-watching tour.

It’s a more open, relaxing contrast to the historical or urban feel of places like Balboa Park or the Gaslamp Quarter — and everything is within walking or short Uber distance from most downtown hotels.

Sea World

SeaWorld is a fun marine animal park that offers exciting rides, engaging animal encounters, and live shows. Visitors can enjoy close-up opportunities with dolphins, sea lions, otters, and even touch rays in interactive exhibits. If you enjoy rides, the Emperor, California’s tallest and fastest dive coaster, and Journey to Atlantis offer a splash of excitement.

In between rides and exhibits, don’t miss the educational presentations featuring orcas, dolphins, and sea lions. It’s a half- to full-day outing, and transportation, such as Uber, is required. I found Uber to be easy. SeaWorld offers a blend of ocean adventure, education, and excitement for both kids and adults!

There are numerous options for restaurants, ranging from coffee shops to quaint cafes and upscale dining establishments. All of these restaurants are within walking distance of areas like the Gaslamp Quarter, Embarcadero, Little Italy, and Seaport Village so that you won’t need a car or a long Uber ride.
